Event Details
Choreographer Jerome Robbins earns a codirector credit for this version of Romeo and Juliet set amongst rival gangs in New York City.
Leonard Bernstein wrote the magnificent score and Stephen Sondheim
the lyrics. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer play the lovers, thwarted not so much by their parents but by loyalty to rival gangs and ethnic divisions.
The film won ten Oscars, including best supporting acting awards for Rita Moreno and George Chakiris. Fabulous songs include Tonight, Maria and America.
